While there are no rules to how you should behave at a yoga studio, some people behave in a manner that is best left outside the studio. - Set an alarm and arrive on time– You can always be late. However, rushing anywhere involves a good amount of stress that you can keep from affecting you and your yoga classmates’ lives. Understand that your peers at the yoga class have already settled in when they’ve arrived and changed into their yoga clothes. They are ready for the class to start. When an individual arrives late to the class, it hampers the overall mood of the session. Now all attention is directed towards this late entrant. Instead, if you arrive early, you get the time to do your stretches and center yourself for the class.
- Be welcoming of others– Okay, so you’ve been attending yoga class for a while now and already have your set place. You come in one day and notice a new addition to the class occupying this place. Your instinct may tell you to go ask this person to shift, but the ethics on which yoga is based instruct otherwise. Yoga preaches non-attachment to material things. It is one of its foremost tenets. Don’t be greedy. Simply accommodate this new person and find out another spot that is comfortable for you.
- Keep your shoes out of the studio– Most yoga studios follow a no shoes policy. The policy serves multiple purposes – going barefoot helps you maintain a connection with the elements, you help keep mud and dust accumulated in your shoes outside, as also express a certain reverence for the subject which yoga classes may expect of you.
- Practice kindness and compassion– If you’ve joined the yoga class to burn off calories, good for you! But don’t forget that this isn’t a strength training gym where you show off your physical fitness. You can do that stretch better than others? Go right ahead. However, if the person next to you is not as flexible as you, this shouldn’t be a cause of mirth. Check your negative behavior at the yoga class. Some energy is best left outside the yoga class, so respect this.
- Go device free– If you are scheduled for an important call during your yoga class, skip the class altogether. Yoga practices mindfulness. You can’t expect to be in the moment when you are always distracted by the screen in front of you. Even if you have switched your device to silent so as not to bother your co classmates, understand why you chose to attend the class. If you’re not going to subscribe to the ethics that yoga espouses, why put yourself through the motion? You should use your yoga class as a timeout from the hyper-attachment that contemporary society practices. Switch your devices off and keep it safely stacked away in your bag. You won’t regret it.
- Gauge the mood of the space and respond accordingly– Your yoga etiquette and hot yoga tips are not complete without this last directive. Some yoga spaces encourage students to get to know each other and bond amongst themselves. Others expect you to focus on your own self and not get distracted by the others present in the class. If your yoga studio happens to be designed around the latter – act accordingly. Take the time you spend in class to look within and assess your personal needs and desires. If you want to socialize with a classmate, you can always go out for coffee outside of class hours.
